9. Paul Revere Yelled “The British Are Coming!”

Paul Revere’s midnight ride is one of the most famous scenes in American history: a lone rider galloping through the night shouting, “The British are coming!” It is patriotic, dramatic, and easy to remember.
But Revere almost certainly did not shout that phrase. Many colonists still considered themselves British, so yelling “the British are coming” would have been confusing and dangerous. The warning was more likely something like “the Regulars are coming out,” referring to British regular troops.
