8. Nero Fiddled While Rome Burned
The phrase “Nero fiddled while Rome burned” is used to describe a leader who ignores disaster while everything falls apart. It paints Nero as a careless emperor playing music while his capital went up in flames. It is memorable, which is why it lasted.
But Nero could not have played a fiddle because the fiddle did not exist in ancient Rome. Some ancient sources claimed or rumored that Nero sang during the disaster, but even that is disputed. The basic point is that the famous phrase is not literal history. It is a later shorthand for Nero’s bad reputation.
