10 History “Facts” That Are Mostly Fake

3. Marie Antoinette Said “Let Them Eat Cake”

Marie Antoinette is often remembered as the spoiled queen who supposedly heard that starving peasants had no bread and replied, “Let them eat cake.” It is a perfect villain line, which is why it has survived for centuries. It makes her sound cold, foolish, and completely disconnected from ordinary people.

But there is no good evidence that she ever said it. Similar stories about out-of-touch aristocrats existed before Marie Antoinette was even queen. The quote was likely attached to her later because she was already unpopular and became a symbol of royal excess during the French Revolution.
