10 History “Facts” That Are Mostly Fake

2. Vikings Wore Horned Helmets

The classic image of a Viking has a beard, a battle axe, and a huge helmet with horns sticking out of both sides. It is everywhere in cartoons, movies, sports logos, and Halloween costumes. The problem is that there is no solid evidence that Viking warriors actually wore horned helmets into battle.

The horned helmet idea became popular much later, especially through 19th-century opera and romanticized art. Real Viking helmets were more practical. Horns would have been awkward, easy to grab, and generally useless in combat. The popular Viking look is less medieval history and more theatrical costume design.
