In December 1872, the merchant ship Mary Celeste was discovered drifting in the Atlantic Ocean near the Azores.

The ship was not a wreck. It was still seaworthy. Supplies remained aboard, and much of its valuable cargo of industrial alcohol was still present.

But every person on the ship was gone.

Captain Benjamin Briggs, his wife, their young daughter, and the crew were never seen again. The ship’s lifeboat was missing, strongly suggesting that the passengers and crew had deliberately left the vessel.

That raises the obvious question: why would experienced sailors abandon a ship that was still capable of floating?

Stories about piracy, mutiny, giant sea creatures, and murder have accumulated around the case, but much of that material was added long after the actual event.

More practical explanations focus on the ship’s cargo. Alcohol vapor, leaking barrels, a faulty measurement of the ship’s water level, or another alarming event may have convinced Briggs that the vessel was in immediate danger.

Why It Is Still a Mystery

The people who boarded the lifeboat never returned to explain their decision. Something apparently frightened them enough to leave a functioning ship in the middle of the Atlantic. Whatever happened next killed every one of them and erased the final chapter of the story.
