  • On June 20, 1837, Victoria became Queen of the United Kingdom after the death of King William IV. Because she was already 18 years old, no regency was required. Her coronation followed nearly a year later in June 1838. Victoria was also the first British monarch to make Buckingham Palace her principal royal residence, transforming it into the center of royal life and government.
