- Queen Victoria carefully planned many details of her own funeral years before her death. Wanting a military funeral that reflected her identity as a soldier’s daughter, she requested ceremonial military honors rather than the somber traditions usually associated with royal funerals. She also instructed that she be dressed in white and have personal mementos of Prince Albert placed in her coffin. Victoria died on January 22, 1901, at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight after a reign of more than 63 years. She was buried beside Prince Albert in the Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore near Windsor, bringing to a close the Victorian Era.
