Victoria Day is celebrated on the last Monday before or on May 24, Queen Victoria’s birthday. It remains an official public holiday throughout Canada and marks the unofficial beginning of summer in many parts of the country. The holiday was first established shortly after Victoria’s death in recognition of her importance to Canadian history and the British Empire. Some communities in Scotland have also historically observed Victoria Day celebrations.
