10 Ancient Inventions That Were Surprisingly Ahead of Their Time

From a mechanical eclipse calculator to coin-operated water and heated Roman floors, these ten ancient inventions reveal a surprisingly ingenious world.

7. Roman Concrete: Building Materials With a Capacity for Repair

Exterior of the Pantheon in Rome

The Pantheon’s enormous dome makes an obvious statement about Roman ambition. The material behind such structures makes an equally interesting statement about Roman experimentation.

Roman builders developed concrete mixtures using lime, aggregates, and, in many applications, volcanic materials. Modern research has investigated why some examples survived so well. One study found evidence that hot mixing with quicklime produced calcium-rich inclusions capable of helping seal cracks when water entered.

That does not mean every Roman wall was indestructible, or that all ancient concrete was better than every modern mix. Researchers are studying particular recipes, materials, and conditions. The exciting point is more specific: features once dismissed as imperfect mixing can play a useful role in durability. Ancient building techniques are still giving materials scientists ideas. A structure can be an archaeological monument and an engineering research problem at the same time.
