10 Ancient Inventions That Were Surprisingly Ahead of Their Time

From a mechanical eclipse calculator to coin-operated water and heated Roman floors, these ten ancient inventions reveal a surprisingly ingenious world.

2. Hero’s Steam Device: A Spinning Sphere Centuries Before Steam Trains

A modern reconstruction of the aeolipile.

Imagine heating a kettle and watching a metal ball above it begin to spin without anyone touching it. In ancient Alexandria, that was already an idea worth writing down.

Hero, also called Heron, described the aeolipile: a hollow sphere supplied with steam from a heated vessel. Steam escaped through bent nozzles, producing thrust that rotated the sphere. The basic effect is easy to recognize today, but the device appeared long before the industrial steam engines familiar from factories and railways.

This was a demonstration of steam power, not evidence that the Romans nearly built locomotives. Producing useful mechanical work reliably would require much more than a spinning ball. Still, it is a wonderful reminder that observing a principle and building an industry around it can be separated by many centuries. Ancient engineers were already experimenting with forces that later transformed the world.
